ThyssenKrupp digs deep

A two year £4.0m investment programme is taking shape at the Vetchberry Steels, the coil processing division of ThyssenKrupp Materials (UK) Ltd., a subsidiary of ThyssenKrupp A.G.

Following the relocation of a newly installed 1650 mm wide coil cut to length line which will form the nucleus of a dedicated sheet and blanks production centre for stainless steel and aluminium, the ground work is getting underway for a new 1850 mm wide coil slitting line.

Adrian Palmer, Operations Manager for the business explains: "The new line, built by Georg in Germany and the UK, requires a looping pit as deep as a 3 storey block of flats is tall". Preparation involved sinking 132 concrete piles 15 metres deep to support the excavation, and around 100,000 gallons of subterranean spring water has been environmentally recycled. "It's a pity we hadn't thought of installing a bottling plant at the outset", says Palmer, "we could have introduced two new development products, instead of just aluminium!"

The work to commission the new slitting line, expected to be the most efficient in the UK for stainless steel and aluminium coil production, will take 3 months, yielding significant benefits for ThyssenKrupp's existing customers and increased capacity to develop new markets, cementing Vetchberry's position as the UK's premier service centre for stainless steel and aluminium.

Sales Apprenticeship Programme

The end of 2013 saw ThyssenKrupp Materials (UK) launch a combined Sales Apprenticeship programme in the Materials and Aerospace areas in partnership with QA Apprenticeships; an award winning apprentice recruiting and training company. "It is important for our business to build the succession plan for the future and bringing young people in at an early point in their careers makes a huge difference to the recruitment challenges we face. It allows us to impart our values and skills for the benefit of both the individual and the organisation", says Dawn Spencer, Group HR Manager.

Fourteen sales apprentices were recruited into the business on an intensive, intermediate level sales apprenticeship programme. Joining in October 2013, they were initially established at eight of our sites across the UK. They were immediately put into the work place and went through an on-the-job work induction programme, introducing them to the business and the products and services specialities at their particular sites. Familiarising them with their teams, managers, mentors and how the business operated the new apprentices spent time in each department to get a good all-round introductory overview. Then the QA Training Boot Camp week arrived, taking place in central Birmingham where QA Sales Training Expert Stuart Allen put them through their paces. On the last day of Boot Camp they took part in a Dragon's Den style presentation in front of the Managing Director and a number of Senior Business Executives demonstrating their learning and abilities. Undaunted by the Dragons, they are all still with us and thriving from further training experiences both with QA and within ThyssenKrupp. Their Managers, who have invested a lot of time into the programme are very satisfied with the progress so far, as are the QA Assessors one of whom said;

"I am very pleased with the level of input from this particular group of sales apprentices who are already producing work of a very high standard when I compare them with other apprentice groups I work with!".

We believe that bringing an apprenticeship scheme to the business, with the top level support of the senior management team as well as the support of all employees and departments confirms how committed ThyssenKrupp Materials (UK) is to people development and training within the organisation. It has given employees throughout the business a chance to pass on their skills, measure their own achievements against new and enthusiastic people in the business and given us all a mirror reflection of how we work which in turn feeds in to our culture of continuous improvement.
